Lowder Library Announces August Events!!

The Ladies of High Tea meets the Fourth Thursday of the Month at 3PM. In August A Red Herring without Mustard: A Flavia de Luce Novel by Alan C. Bradley will be discussed.  Join us at 3PM on Thursday, August 22, 2019.

In the hamlet of Bishop’s Lacey, the insidiously clever and unflappable eleven-year-old sleuth Flavia de Luce had asked a Gypsy woman to tell her fortune—never expecting to later stumble across the poor soul, bludgeoned almost to death in the wee hours in her own caravan. Was this an act of retribution by those convinced that the soothsayer abducted a local child years ago? Certainly Flavia understands the bliss of settling scores; revenge is a delightful pastime when one has two odious older sisters. But how could this crime be connected to the missing baby? As the red herrings pile up, Flavia must sort through clues fishy and foul to untangle dark deeds and dangerous secrets.

In September 2019 the Ladies of High Tea will read their annual classic. This year they embrace the grand dame of mystery – Agatha Christie.  The book they will be reading will be And Then There Were None. Join us at 3PM on Thursday, September 26, 2019.

Ten strangers, apparently with little in common, are lured to an island mansion off the coast of Devon by the mysterious U. N. Owen. Over dinner, a record begins to play, and the voice of an unseen host accuses each person of hiding a guilty secret. That evening, former reckless driver Tony Marston is found murdered by a deadly dose of cyanide.

The tension escalates as the survivors realize the killer is not only among them but is preparing to strike again… and again…

The Young Classic Book Club meets from 4PM to 5PM on the third Thursday of the month. Thursday, August 15, 2019 the Young Classic Book Club will read Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.

Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school . . . again. And that’s the least of his troubles. Lately, mythological monsters and the gods of Mount Olympus seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy’s Greek mythology textbook and into his life. And worse, he’s angered a few of them. Zeus’s master lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect.

Now Percy and his friends have just ten days to find and return Zeus’s stolen property and bring peace to a warring Mount Olympus. But to succeed on his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the true thief: he must come to terms with the father who abandoned him; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of betrayal by a friend; and unravel a treachery more powerful than the gods themselves.

Thursday, September 19, 2019 the Young Classic Book Club will read The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

The story is of the fabulously wealthy Jay Gatsby and his new love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan, of lavish parties on Long Island at a time when The New York Times noted “gin was the national drink and sex the national obsession,” it is an exquisitely crafted tale of America in the 1920s.
