Pike Road Branch Library’s February 2018 Programs
Storybook Time – for age three through six – Mondays at 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
At Storybook Time, we sing a few songs, read one or two picture books and make a craft. We will read the same books at 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Here is what we have planned for this month:
- February 5 – Gerald really wants to play outside, but then an awful thing happens–it starts raining! Will he and Piggie ever get to play outside? We’ll find out when we read Are You Ready to Play Outside? by Mo Willems.
- February 12 – Marylou loves Herbie, but she is too shy to tell him. Instead, she uses her slime trail to leave sweet poems for him to find and he, in turn, leaves slime poetry all over the place. However, their slimy paths never seem to cross. It’s the classic story of girl slug loves boy slug in Slugs in Love by Susan Pearson and Kevin O’Malley.
- February 19 – There will be no Storybook Times today because the library will be closed in observance of Presidents’ Day
- February 26 – Groovy Joe loves to sing and to share. We’ll groove along to two Groovy Joe books when we read Groovy Joe: Ice Cream and Dinosaurs and Groovy Joe: Dance Party Countdown by Eric Litwin and Tom Lichtenheld

Book Maniaks – for children in third grade and up –On Wednesday, February 7 at 4:15 p.m., the Maniaks will discuss The Last Dragon by Silvana De Mari.
Publisher’s Summary – When the last dragon and the last elf break the circle, the past and the future will meet, and the sun of a new summer will shine in the sky. In a world shrouded in darkness and continually lashed by rain, a young elf named Yorsh struggles to survive. His village has been destroyed by the torrential waters, leaving Yorsh suddenly orphaned and alone—the earth’s last elf. But soon Yorsh discovers he is part of a powerful prophecy to save the world from the Dark Age that has begun. First, however, the young elf will have to find another orphaned creature—the world’s last dragon. Full of great tenderness and humor, this magical journey tells the story of a world plagued by intolerance and wickedness, and the elf and the dragon who will fight for its redemption and bring it back into the light.
Bookies – The Pike Road Bookies meet on the third Thursday of each month, except December. –On Thursday, February 15 at 11:15 a.m., they will discuss All Together Now by Gill Hornby.
Publisher’s Summary – Four strangers in the midst of difficult life transitions find friendship, purpose, and perfect pitch in in this heartfelt comic novel. In the small English village of St. Ambrose, the members of the Bridgeford Community Choir have little in common. But when their singing coach dies unexpectedly before a big contest, the motley group must join forces and voices in pursuit of an impossible-seeming goal. Featuring an eclectic cast of characters including: a mother suffering from empty nest syndrome, a middle-aged man who has just lost his job and his family, and a 19-year-old waitress who dreams of reality TV stardom, All Together Now is a poignant and charming novel about small town life, community, falling in love, and the big rewards of making a small change.
