November 1, 2016 @ 11:30 Pre-K

             BOOK: “Duck for President” by: Doreen Cronin

                       Synopsis —- It is our pleasure, our honor, our duty as citizens to present to you

Duck for President. Here is a duck who began in a humble pond. Who

worked his way to farmer. To governor. And now, perhaps, to the

highest office in the land. Some say, if he walks like a duck and talks like

a duck, he is a duck. We say, if he walks like a duck and talks like a duck,

he will be the next president of the United States of America. Thank you for your vote.

            ACTIVITY: Make ducks out of paper plates and construction paper

 

November 1, 2016 @ 1:30 1st Grade

             BOOK: Mrs. Chicken and the Hungry Crocodile by: Won-Ldy Paye

                       Synopsis —- One morning Mrs. Chicken took her bath in a puddle.                                                     “Cluck, cluck,” she said proudly. “What a pretty chicken I am!”

Mrs. Chicken can’t see her wings in the puddle, so she walks

down to the river where she can admire all of herself. She doesn’t

know that Crocodile is there, waiting for dinner―and a tasty chicken

would do nicely! To save herself, Mrs. Chicken tells Crocodile that

they are sisters. But how can a speckled chicken and a green-skinned

crocodile be related? Mrs. Chicken had better prove that they are,

and fast, because Crocodile is getting hungrier . . .

an owl listens for little creatures scurrying far below. Mouse? Squirrel?

Rabbit? Or something else entirely? Stunning illustrations plus hypnotic

text take readers on a suspenseful journey through night and nature.      

            ACTIVITY: Make owls out of brown lunch bags

             BOOK: Cluck O’ Clock   by: Kes Gray

                        Synopsis —-  It’s 4 o’cluck in the morning. Another day is dawning….Colin the rooster

puffs out his chest. Ready to do what he doodle-doos best. Telling the

time has never been funnier, as the hens clock watch from food time

until fox time. But there may not be a next time unless Colin and the hens

save themselves from the greedy fox.

BOOK: “Pop: The Invention of Bubble Gum”  by: Megan McCarthy

                        Synopsis:—- Gum. It’s been around for centuries—from the ancient Greeks to the

American Indians, everyone’s chewed it. But the best kind of gum—

bubble gum!—wasn’t invented until 1928, when an enterprising young

accountant at Fleer Gum and Candy used his spare time to experiment

with different recipes.

                        Synopsis —-  Two pilgrim brothers set out to find a turkey for Thanksgiving dinner. The

big pilgrim is ready and raring to get one, but the little pilgrim is not sure so

He has other ideas about what makes a good Thanksgiving, but how can he

convince his older brother? Meanwhile, the turkey, with the help of his animal

friends, is doing his hilarious best to escape from becoming the main course!

             BOOK: Celebrate Thanksgiving Day with Beto and Gaby   by: Alma Flor Ada

                        Synopsis —- Beto and Gaby anxiously wait for their relatives to arrive for Thanksgiving

dinner. One by one, they call to inform the family they will not be able to

attend because of a great snowstorm. Suddenly,  their grandmother appears

with a group of elder friends who have nowhere to have dinner, and the celebration

becomes really special. Contains an informative section on Thanksgiving day.      

            ACTIVITY: Make turkey gift cups

                       Synopsis —- With the help of Miss Brooks, Missy’s classmates all find books

they love in the library—books about fairies and dogs and trains

and cowboys. But Missy dismisses them all—“Too flowery, too furry,

too clickety, too yippity.”Still, Miss Brooks remains undaunted. Book

Week is here and Missy will find a book to love if they have to empty

the entire library. What story will finally win over this beastly, er,

discriminating child? William Steig’s Shrek!—the tale of a repulsive

green ogre in search of a revolting bride—of course!

                      Synopsis:—This title explains the ingenious ways in which detectives analyze crime

Scene and deduce Criminal Identity using Scientific Methods and covers

subjects such as ballistics fingerprints DNA. Pathology clues in nature.

forgery and forensic psychology. Each chapter contains a case study of

a real-life crime solved through forensic methods told in comic strip form

as well as illustrations of crime scenes for readers to investigate for

themselves. It contains a full glossary of technical terms and internet-links

to encourage further learning.

             BOOK: Beans Baker Bounces Back by: Richard Torrey

                        Synopsis —- Beans Baker sure can pogo. He’s the Robo-Pogo champion of the

school—until his classmate Sheldon beats his record. Beans knows

he can become the Robo-Pogo Champion for Life, if only he didn’t

have to study for that pesky spelling test.
