February 2016 at Lowder Regional Library
The Ladies of High Tea will be meeting Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at 3PM and reading The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch.
“We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand.” –Randy Pausch
A lot of professors give talks titled “The Last Lecture.” Professors are asked to consider their demise and to ruminate on what matters most to them. And while they speak, audiences can’t help but mull the same question: What wisdom would we impart to the world if we knew it was our last chance? If we had to vanish tomorrow, what would we want as our legacy?
When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn’t have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. But the lecture he gave–“Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams”–wasn’t about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because “time is all you have…and you may find one day that you have less than you think”). It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It was about living.
In this book, Randy Pausch has combined the humor, inspiration and intelligence that made his lecture such a phenomenon and given it an indelible form. It is a book that will be shared for generations to come.
The Lowder Regional Branch Library Chess club meets every Saturday, from 10AM to 1245—sharp. In the event that the club is not meeting a sign will be posted as soon as possible announcing the postponement. Join us and learn how to play chess or to brush up on your skills. Parents, chess is a game that will help build the brain and help your child with their future education—not to mention that it teaches patience as well.
Don’t forget Gamer’s Club is the Second Friday of the month 4PM-5PM. There is a limited number of slots available and pre-registration is required and a signed permission slip must be on file. Parents must stay in the library while children are playing.
On the third Friday of the month, 4PM-5PM, the Lowder Lego League, has fun in the meeting room. Due to fire regulations we have to also limit the number of participants for this event as well so pre-registration is required.
On February 22, 2016 the Lowder Staff will begin an eight-week Job Search/Job Preparedness Workshop from 630pm -830pm each Monday through April 11, 2016.
A schedule of events and a poster are attached to this email.
